Knitting information

The average sizes of babies’ and toddlers’ feet:

0–6 months = 10.5 cm

6–12 months = 12 cm

12–18 months = 13.5 cm

18–24 months = 14.5 cm

2–3 years = 16 cm

Instructions are given for 12–18 months. Adjust length and width according to size of feet.
Adjust as follows:
Long socks: Knit ribbing in multiples of 4 stitches more and knit section after rib to preferred length.
Shoes with tassel: the width of the rectangle will be the length of the shoe. If the foot’s length is 16 cm, knit a rectangle of 16 cm x 16 cm.
Shoes with blanket stitch edging: measure width and length of foot and knit accordingly. Knit another two rectangles for the top. It can expand and can therefore be knitted a bit smaller than the foot.

1 Shoes with blanket stitch edging 1 ball ELLE Kidz DK in Periwinkle, bit of matching DK wool, 4 mm needles
2 Shoes with tassel 1 ball ELLE Family Knit DK in Crocus, bit of DK wool, 4 mm needles
3 Long socks 1 ball ELLE Sock Wool in Chino, 2.75 mm and 3.25 mm needles

Abbreviations

2×2 rib: 1st row: *k2, p2, rep from * to end. 2nd row: knit k sts and purl p sts. Rep 1st and 2nd rows. dms – double moss stitch 1st row: *k2, p2, rep from * to end. 2nd row: knit k sts and purl p sts. 3rd row: purl k sts and knit p sts. 4th row: knit k sts and purl p sts. Rep 1st to 4th row. ss – stocking stitch 1st row: k. 2nd row: p. Rep 1st and 2nd rows. ms – moss stitch 1st row: *k1, p, rep from * to end. 2nd row: knit p sts and purl k sts. Rep 1st and 2nd rows. k – knit gs – garter stitch (knit every row)

1 Shoes with blanket stitch edging (6 rectangles)

With 4 mm needles cast on 6 sts and work in ss for 12 cm. Cast off.

To assemble

Put down one rectangle for the sole. Sew two rectangles’ short sides together – the seam is back of heel. Work along edge in blanket stitch with matching wool. Sew on unworked side from heel to front and sew short point flat on to sole’s toe section. Do the same with other half and fold over previous toe section. Work blanket stitch or tacking stitch around sole edge (optional).

2 Shoes with tassel (make 6)

With 4 mm needles cast on 25 sts. Work in ms for 37 rows (till it is a square). Cast off.

To assemble

Sew two squares together. Fold third square in shape of triangle and sew on. Fold in square’s tip and two sides’ tips and sew on (see photo). Sew triangle’s tip to sole’s tip at the back and angled side to where square’s tips converge. Make tassels and sew on top (optional).

3 Long socks (make 2)

With 2.75 mm needles cast on 36 sts. Work in 2×2 rib for 14 rows, ending with p row. Continue with 3.25 mm needles in dms till it is 18 cm, or length required, ending with p row. Shape tip as follows: 1st row: *k4, k2tog, rep from * to end. 2nd row: *p2tog, p3, rep from * to end. 3rd row: *k2, k2tog, rep from * to end. 4th row: *p2tog, p1, rep from * to end. 5th row: k2tog to end. Cut thread, draw through remaining sts, pull tight and sew on.

To complete

Sew up seam.
